My Favorite DIY Gifts

Recipes and Tutorials

Well, it’s official. Halloween is over, and as the discounted candy takes its place on the back shelves of retailers everywhere, Christmas trees, candy canes, and Santa hats take center stage (center store?). ‘Tis the gift-giving season. Here are some of my tried-and-true DIY gifts to inspire your holiday search.

Unicorn Horn Headband from Tikkido

Easy, adorable, wearable. I used fake flowers instead of making my own from felt, which I think made it look a bit more mystical.

Harry Potter Ornaments from Shelterness and Do It Yourself Divas, and inspired by Conjured by Cristy

I made a set of 6 of these for a friend once, and she was enchanted. It’s a bit time consuming, but the beautiful results are worth it.

Hollowed book by Kenarry

Turn it into a jewelry box like in this tutorial, a tea box, like I did, or leave the unassuming cover alone to create a secret hiding spot.
Upcycle a thrift store book into a DIY Jewelry Box. In this video tutorial, we'll show you step by step how to hollow out a book to create a book box.

Gift Baskets

For the hard-to-shop-for, it’s fairly easy to piece together a fun and thoughtful gift basket. I usually go with 1 mid-priced main item and surround it with smaller, inexpensive items or food. For example, a coffee gift basket could include a fancy travel mug surrounded by single K cups, a bag of grounds, wrapped biscotti, and chocolate spoons.

Photo Collage

This could work for a variety of people: Those you don’t know very well, those who seem to have everything, those who are constantly taking pictures. Go to their Instagram or Facebook page to find photos, and arrange them in a collage, either mod podged on a fun paper-mache shape, or in a pretty frame. See my graduation gift collage tutorial here.
